Nine Elms is one of central London’s most exciting new neighbourhoods, situated on the south bank of the river Thames, just across the river and to the west of Chelsea, with the Palace of Westminster located just to the north. Nine Elms encompasses 195 hectares of land between Battersea and Vauxhall, and is already home to a variety of new homes, businesses and leisure areas.

 

History

 

Nine Elms was first named in 1645 from a row of elms trees which bordered the road. In 1838 when Nine Elms railway station opened, the area was described as "a low swampy district occasionally overflowed by the Thames”. The station later became redundant when the line was extended to Waterloo and the site was then used for railway wagon and cabin works, these buildings were later damaged in World War II and as a result all closed. In 1853 Glassworks were built on the site, later Battersea Power Station was established here.

 

Nine Elms Today

 

Nine Elms is one of the capital’s most exciting new neighbourhoods, it is one of London’s most important regeneration projects in decades. Work started in 2013 and it is already home to a number of new apartments, businesses and leisure areas, primarily around Battersea Power Station. Another huge development for Nine Elms was when the US Embassy announced its relocation to the area, the new Embassy building is due to complete in 2017. There will also be a two-station tube extension of the Northern line from Kennington, providing new stops at Nine Elms and Battersea. Other plans include extending riverboat service to a new pier at Battersea Station, along with a cycling initiative.
