Studying at SOAS University of London

SOAS University of London was first opened back in 1916 and is currently ranked in the top 25 Universities in the United Kingdom according to the Guardian University Guide 2018. Since then the University has produced a number of notable graduates and alumni, and built a reputation for not only academic excellence but for world-leading research and tuition in the fields of Asian, African and Middle Eastern studies.

Originally named the School of Oriental Studies, the University registered its first students in 1917 and went from strength to strength. So much so in fact, that by 1938 it had taken on so many students and branched out into so many subject areas that it had to rebrand as the School of Oriental and African Studies – SOAS.

Students at SOAS University of London can choose from more than 350 different degree options ranging from single honours courses to combined degrees with some even incorporating a year abroad at a partner University so that students can learn even more about their chosen subject area in a country relevant to their course. This helps students to develop their understanding of not only the course, but the languages and cultures associated with their area of study.

In addition to these key study areas, SOAS also offers a number of other highly rated degree courses including the widely acclaimed SOAS School of Law.

The SOAS on-campus library has more than one million different texts and electronic resources for students to use; all focussed on the study of Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The recently refurbished library attracts interest from students, graduates and tutors from around the world.

With more than 20 sports teams to join or try out for and over 160 different societies to be a part of there are plenty of opportunities for you to meet new friends. The SOAS Students’ Union has activities and events throughout the year. The Union is the place to go if you’re having any difficulties with your course or being a student living in London.

Of course, the Student’s Union is also home to an on-campus bar where students can meet for a coffee, bite to eat or a drink in the evenings where you can socialise and unwind with fellow students.

Famous graduates and notable SOAS alumni include Aung San Suu Kyi the State Counsellor of Myanmar and the current England rugby union player Maro Itoje.

In addition to the scheduled open days there are also opportunities to be taken on campus tours which are less detailed but often just as valuable in learning about your surroundings and then going off to identify the kind of student rentals near SOAS University of London.
