Diary of an Estate Agent: West End
Ben Brower, Lettings Negotiator for our Henrietta House office, discusses a typical week at CBRE Residential...
It’s my first day in CBRE’s West End office following my transfer from east London, so I’m feeling pretty excited. I loved working in Canary Wharf but I’m ready to get my teeth into a different market.
My new manager takes me for a coffee and we run through my first day’s itinerary, starting with getting to know applicants. My first viewing is a six-bedroom refurbished townhouse in Clerkenwell, with an applicant who is looking for accommodation for some of the cast of a West End musical. He offers on the property there and then. I wonder if there’s a chance of any discounted tickets…
I’m with a member of international royalty who is looking for a London base around Knightsbridge. We visit an incredible two-bedroom apartment — fingers crossed it ticks the boxes. The rest of my day takes me on multiple viewings stretching from Covent Garden right over to Wapping where I do a viewing with a development which, when complete, will totally transform this part of town, creating new homes, shops, restaurants, bars and public space.
With my manager, I’m off to see a refurbished two-bedroom apartment in Belgravia. It has been finished to an incredibly high standard and is just a few minutes’ walk from Harrods, which I’m sure will be a major attraction. We get instructed there and then.
Our sales team has forwarded an interesting task to me. It is a request from a film director looking to rent multiple properties for his crew. I immediately book him in to look at some apartments around Southbank, his preferred area. Then it’s straight back to the office to try to get some of these offers tied up.
I tuck into my Friday treat — a full English breakfast — on my way to the office. It has been a hectic first week but the weekend is in sight. Fridays are always a bit manic as we try to get deals tied up, and within 20 minutes I’ve already had two additional offers. The team then manages to get these offers agreed before the afternoon — to the delight of the landlords and tenants concerned.
It has by all accounts been a great first week for me here in the heart of town.
