London's best coffee

With more and more boutique coffee bars opening across London, we've done the research to find the top five spots in central London for the perfect brew.

New Row Coffee

24 New Row, WC2N 471

Tucked away on Covent Garden’s New Row, this quaint café is serving up strong espressos and smooth daily drip coffee. A delectable range of pastries and tarts are also available, though the main focus is truly on the coffee.

The staff are all friendly and though I’ve never been served by the same barista twice, it really doesn’t matter; the quality of coffee remains outstanding.

Opening at 7:30am on weekdays, New Row Coffee is perfect for providing a quick caffeine hit before that early morning meeting.

Soho Grind

19 Beak Street, W1F 9RP

The second venture in in the Grind family (Shoreditch Grind being the first, followed by Soho, Holborn and now London Grind on London Bridge), Soho Grind has brought exceptional coffee and espresso-based cocktails to the West End.

First opened in early(ish) 2014, Soho Grind offers patrons strong and smooth coffee at street level, while the basement shakes out some classic cocktails.

Already the winner of a number of accolades, Soho Grind is a must visit for coffee and cocktail enthusiasts.

15 Eastcastle Street, W1T 3AY

An Australian/New Zealand owned café, Kaffeine aims to bring the vibrant café culture of our antipodean brothers and sisters to the centre of London, and it succeeds.

A great selection of freshly baked snacks, loose leaf tea and of course exceptional coffee, have proved popular with customers, with Kaffeine now considered an industry leader in the hospitality world.

Their premises are a haven of industrial-chic design and perfect for that mid-morning meeting. Great service and friendly staff top off the experience of this West End staple.

27 Monmouth Street, WC2H 9EU

Monmouth started roasting coffee in Seven Dials in 1978 (before moving their roasting facilities off-site to Bermondsey and focussing on brewing), so it’s safe to say they’re local experts when it comes to the perfect cup of Joe.

As well as serving great coffee, Monmouth are big on selling (and grinding) customers their favourite blend. They also have an unrivalled selection of the latest coffee-brewing paraphernalia.

Timber Yard

7 Upper St Martin’s Lane, WC2H 9DL

As soon as you walk through the door at Timber Yard, you’re overwhelmed (and slightly intimidated) by the front counter covered in tasty treats. Croissants and brownies and tarts, oh my!

Delicious as these morsels may be, the real draw card for us is of course the coffee. Brewing with Has Bean Coffee, the team offer a wide selection of coffee varieties from a flat white to an extra shot long black.

Sporting a lively atmosphere, the café is ideal for a pre or post theatre beverage, with plenty of tables and lots of space.
