The Top 10 locations in London for nature lovers

As summer arrives in the capital, thoughts turn to enjoying the great outdoors. As a sprawling city, you might not expect London to be great for nature and wide open spaces but we can officially dispel this myth.

The CBRE Hot 100  looked at the best boroughs in London for nature lovers in terms of green space, something now deemed to be essential to overall physical, mental and social wellbeing.

Our recent Wellness Report looked at the seven key factors contributing to the wellbeing of those living and working in and around London – and the wider UK – with the ability to get outside into open spaces, to exercise and to relax all affecting how “well” we are as a nation.

In the Hot 100 report we revealed that the borough of Havering has more open space than any other, with 59 per cent dedicated to nature in terms of parks and green spaces. The total area comes to more than 67.5 million square metres of green space, with three major parks in the borough – Raphael, Hylands and Upminster.

Bromley, a much larger borough then Havering, has an overall total of more than 86 million square metres of green space equating to 57.4 per cent of the total borough, and is unofficially known as London’s greenest borough.

Close behind in terms of percentages is Richmond upon Thames, a part of the Metropolitan Green Belt, where 57 per cent of the borough (equating to just over 33 million square metres) is occupied by beautiful green spaces. Notable areas including Richmond Park and Kew Gardens contribute significantly to this.

Completing the top ten boroughs for nature are Enfield, where 48.5 per cent of the borough is made up of open spaces followed by Hillingdon (45 per cent). Next are Redbridge and Greenwich with 40.3 per cent and 39.3 per cent respectively. In eighth position is Bexley with 38.9 per cent and then Barnet with 37.7 per cent, just ahead of Hounslow which rounds off the top ten with 37.5 per cent of the borough made up of green space.
