Covent Garden is one of London’s leading areas for shopping and entertainment, with a number of global brands having made the area their home. People come from all over London, and much further afield, to visit Covent Garden and its infamous market; while the vibrant Piazza is home to a number of popular bars and restaurants which are ideal for any student living in London.

A part of both the Borough of Camden and the City of Westminster, and bordered by Shaftesbury Avenue to the North and the River Thames to the South, a lot has been packed into the Covent Garden area. Over the years the area has evolved from a convent’s garden outside St Paul’s Church into one of London’s most famous locations. The pedestrianized area is based around a cobbled square where you may even come across a number of live performers, street food vendors and big-name shops.

Nightlife and live entertainment

Whether you enjoy a quiet drink in an up-market bar with friends or you’re into venues that offer great drinks and live music, Covent Garden offers something to suit you. Best of all, you never have to walk or travel too far in search of an alternative if the music or vibe aren’t to your taste.

Leicester Square is one of London’s most famous areas and this is just a short walk to the West of Covent Garden. Many of the world’s most famous film stars have graced the red carpet in Leicester Square ahead of their movie premieres so you have the opportunity to spot some of the biggest stars in Hollywood – and because Covent Garden is such a popular and vibrant area you may even see some celebrities in the various bars.

For a more cultural evening, the Royal Opera House stands proudly in Covent Garden and has shows throughout the day as well as evening productions and guided tours should you wish to take a look around backstage. The venue is home to the Royal Ballet, the Royal Opera and the ROH Orchestra which means that there is the chance to take in a range of productions; and the Royal Opera House has its own restaurant with views over the Piazza if you feel like grabbing some food before a show.

St Martin’s Theatre and the Lyceum Theatre are two other fantastic venues in the area, showing productions that have included The Lion King and The Mousetrap over the years.

In terms of eateries, Rules is believed to be the oldest restaurant in all of London, with the venue having opened back in 1798. Such is the popularity and charm of the Maiden Lane restaurant; it has appeared countless times on the small and big screen having featured in the James Bond film “Spectre” starring Daniel Craig and more widely in the internationally renowned period drama Downton Abbey.

Flat Iron is another immensely popular restaurant in the heart of Covent Garden and has space for more than 180 diners – it even houses its own butchers!

Street food vendors and performers are located all around the Market Square and Piazza which can help to create a wonderful atmosphere all year round. Performers encourage people to get involved with their acts or to take a seat to watch the next show, while street food vendors are cooking their food freshly and right before your eyes to order which means you get some delicious smells drifting across the Piazza.

Transport links in Covent Garden

The main Covent Garden Underground station is at the top of James Street. The station serves the Piccadilly line and is situated to the North of the main Market Square where it’s just a short walk to the Piazza or the areas around Covent Garden that include Leicester Square, Strand, Holborn and Trafalgar Square.

Charing Cross, Embankment and Temple Underground stations are also within close proximity and connect people living in their student accommodation in Covent Garden to the wider London Area and their specific Universities.

The area is also well served from a National Rail perspective. Charing Cross, Waterloo, Waterloo East and the City Thameslink stations are all just a short walk from Covent Garden and enable residents and visitors to get around the city – or the UK – with ease. Connections are also available that will take students living in London to other major stations including St Pancras International and London Euston.

Buses run through the immediate vicinity at regular intervals with many stopping at key locations including Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square and Aldwych making the Universities easily accessible however you choose to travel. Shopping in Covent Garden

Shopping has become a major part of life in Covent Garden and the traditional market, which still remains prominent today, is at the heart of this. Local traders are present throughout the week selling their handmade creations and this helps to create a great atmosphere around the Piazza with the buzz of excitement generated by these local traders.

From global tech giants to fashion brands who can be found in New York, Paris and Milan; Covent Garden is home to them all. The likes of Apple, Bose, Chanel, Dior, Armani, Pandora, Trevor Sorbie, Barbour, Burberry, Kurt Keiger, Karen Millen, Mulberry, Rolex, Hackett and Chanel all have stores and boutiques in the Covent Garden area selling their incredible high-end fashions, gadgets and jewellery.

In addition to Covent Garden Market Square, St Martin’s Courtyard is fast becoming another of London’s most popular shopping areas. The open-air courtyard is still in the very centre of Covent Garden but provides a wonderful contrast to the more traditional Market. It offers shoppers a number of unique and independent stores combined with a number of established brands with boutiques and flagships.

Landmarks and Tourist Destinations in Covent Garden

The London Transport Museum is a Victorian building located on the East of the Piazza, originally used as a flower market. It was turned into a museum at the beginning of the 20th century as a home for retired London buses before the collection was updated with a range of classic British vehicles.

The Grade I listed Drury Lane Theatre was first opened in 1663 but has been extensively redeveloped over the years without moving from its location. It was destroyed by fire less than a decade after opening and is today owned by the composer Andrew Lloyd Webber who uses the venue to host a number of his shows during their national tours.

St Paul’s Church is one of the most iconic landmarks in the area and was built in 1633. It has gone on to be given the nickname of “the Actor’s Church” as the space immediately outside is widely used by street performers.

The beautiful neo-classical building Somerset House is situated to the South of Covent Garden, between Strand and the River. During the summer this arts and cultural centre is home to 55 fully-functioning fountains that are programmed to display a wonderful water show and the area is transformed into an ice rink in the winter. The area is used for open-air concerts and films during the summer with a spectacular backdrop. Guided tours of the House are available.

Gyms in Covent Garden
