If you’re thinking of going to King’s College London for the 2017/2018 academic year then it’s worth taking the time to read this handy University guide compiled by the team here at CBRE Residential. Studying at King's College London

King’s College London was established in 1829 by King George IV and the Duke of Wellington, the then Prime Minister. Having formed in the traditions of the Church of England it now welcomes men and women from all faiths and has continued to expand through mergers with a number of key institutions in the area including Queen Elizabeth College and the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals.

Today it is ranked as the joint 23rd-best University in the world alongside the University of Edinburgh according to the 2016/17 QS World University Rankings; and the 5th best in the United Kingdom behind the iconic Universities of Cambridge and Oxford and London neighbours UCL and Imperial College London.

There are also around 6,800 members of staff currently employed at the University and 84% of research conducted at King’s was classed as “world leading” or “internationally excellent” in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) showing the dedication to excellence in every single aspect at the University.

With eight different faculties the courses on offer at King’s are wide ranging. The Faculty of Arts and Humanities offers subjects including English, History and philosophy; the Dental Institute has everything from distance learning and postgraduate courses to dental innovation for prospective dentists. The Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine is the largest at the University and offers courses in areas including nutrition, neuroscience, diabetes and cancer studies. The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience gives students the opportunity to study courses including child and adolescent psychiatry.

There is then the Dickson Poon School of Law and the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, plus the Faculty of Natural and Mathematical Sciences which includes physics and chemistry and finally the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy with courses looking at politics, geography and economics.

In terms of campus life, King’s has the typical Student’s Union that is home to the various clubs and societies. There are then a number of bars and places where you can grab a bite to eat or cup of coffee on campus prior to or after your lectures. With a number of sports clubs and societies to get involved with there is also plenty of chance for you to participate in student fundraising events or you can enjoy the more social side of student life in London by attending one of the many student nights on and around the main campus.

The location of the University – right in the centre of London – has helped King’s to build links with a number of partners across business, industry, government, charities, sports, the arts and culture which means that students have an opportunity to progress from King’s College London into valuable positions within major companies and organisations.

King’s currently offers a number of guided campus tours and open days for Undergraduate applicants throughout the year. Tours are available every weekday giving you the opportunity to explore the facilities and to ask current students and staff the kind of questions you’d like answering before making your decision to apply, or to clear up any confusion.

Transport Links

The Strand campus is situated on the North bank of the River Thames making it easily accessible by a number of different methods. The central location is great for public transport with numerous Underground and Overground rail services running through the local area and buses frequently passing the main campus giving you plenty of options and routes to King’s.

There are three Tube stations nearby with Temple the closest to the main Strand campus. Covent Garden is also close by on the North of the River while Waterloo isn’t too far away but it does mean crossing the Thames via Waterloo Bridge. Charing Cross and Embankment are also viable alternative stops if you feel like taking a walk to see some of the local area on your way to the campus.

Strand, Temple and the Northbank area as a whole are popular routes for commuters and tourists alike meaning that there are always buses going by. You can use your contactless bank card or your Oyster Card to pay for your travel to and from the University and – in the case of your Oyster Card – this can also be used to pay for your Tube or Overground rail travel should you wish to travel across the city at any point.

For those looking to travel to or from King’s by train the nearest stations are at Waterloo or Charing Cross, while St Pancras International is only a short distance away if you’re arriving from France by rail.

The closest airports to King’s College London are Heathrow and London City airports, both of which have access to the Tube and will take passengers straight to the main Strand campus in around an hour with a short walk at the end. These options are ideal for any students who are moving to King’s from overseas or who may be travelling from parts of the UK where air travel is a preferred option.

Student Life in the Northbank

You can’t really ask for much more when you’re a student living in London. The city has been voted as the world’s third best city for students with something for everybody to love whether you’re after something active, relaxing, educational, sociable, accessible or adrenaline-fuelled.

The Northbank is an area packed full of culture and theatres ensuring that anyone attending King’s and studying the arts is well catered for! There are some small theatres that play host to a number of intimate shows with small audiences and then there are the larger venues such as the Novello Theatre, the Lyceum Theatre, the Garrick Theatre and – perhaps the most famous of all – Shakespeare’s Globe all within a short distance of the main campus.

There are plenty of student nights and events taking place all over London throughout the week. Many venues will be holding themed, ticketed events with discounted food and drink available all day and all evening; while there are a number of secret and exclusive venues located around the city just waiting for you to discover.

Notable locations nearby include the vibrant Soho and Covent Garden where there are all kinds of bars, restaurants, markets, shops and entertainment venues; while St. James’ Park is a vast green space just a short walk from King’s and close to a number of student lettings where you can unwind, relax and even study in the sunshine if you fancy a bit of al fresco revision.

King’s College’s prime location in the heart of the capital means that it’s not too far from various major tourist hot spots. From a cultural and historic perspective the National Gallery and St. Paul’s Cathedral are just a few minutes away; while Trafalgar Square, London Eye, the Tower of London and Tower Bridge are also close by for you to visit at your leisure.
