Studying at LSE

Situated in the very heart of London, LSE is in a prime location within central London. According to the latest QS World University Rankings for the 2016/17 academic year, LSE is ranked as the joint 37th best University in the world. This equates to being the 8th best University in the United Kingdom. In its primary field of Social Sciences, LSE is ranked as the second best University in the world behind the infamous Harvard University in the United States.

Now more than 125-years old, LSE is recognised around the world for offering a fantastic student experience both inside and outside the lecture theatre. Courses available to study at LSE include Business and Economics subjects including accounting and business management, Physical Sciences including geology and mathematics, Arts and Humanities classes including History and Philosophy, and Social Sciences courses that include geography, law and psychology.

With more than 200 different student societies to join up to including almost 50 sports clubs, students at LSE have the opportunity to get involved in all kinds of different events and activities on campus. The Students’ Union is a hive of activity all year round with more than 200 public events taking place each year including more than 30 annual literary festivals and around 20 music concerts every year.

Transport Links

Thanks to its central location LSE is well connected with the various forms of public transport in and around London. Payments for the Underground and buses can be made using contactless payments or Oyster Cards and travel information can be found on the Transport for London (TfL) website, here.

Holborn station is on the Piccadilly and Central lines is approximately five minutes away from the main campus and is situated on the corner of Kingsway and High Holborn. Temple is equally close and is on the District and Circle lines, located on the Embankment on Arundel Street. Alternatively the Charing Cross Underground station is around ten minutes away. This station is a stop on the Northern and Bakerloo lines and is situated at the Trafalgar Square end of the Strand.

For national rail services LSE is well served with relatively easy access to Waterloo, Charing Cross and Blackfriars; while London St. Pancras International is a short tube journey away and will connect London to Paris and Brussels which is ideal for any students looking to get away for a few days or for international students to head back home for a short break.

For students taking the bus to the main campus from their chosen student accommodation, buses stop frequently on Aldwych and have just a short walk to the University.

Student Life at LSE

London was recently voted as the third best student city in the world and given its size and sheer variety of things to see and do it’s easy to understand why. London is a thriving, metropolitan city that never sleeps and it offers something for every kind of personality.

As the name suggests, the Northbank is on the Northern side of the River Thames, but popular entertainment venues on the South side are easily accessible by crossing one of London’s many beautiful bridges. For those living in student accommodation in the Northbank you’ll find plenty to see and do ranging from theatres to exclusive clubs and bars.

From those looking for a relatively quiet life close to the University where they can study and experience student life in London to those looking to get out and about whenever possible, London has something for everybody and many of the most popular locations are close to LSE and a number of our student lettings.

When it comes to entertainment, Soho is undoubtedly the place to be. There are all kinds of live entertainment venues, cocktail bars and restaurants that will help you to unwind after a long day on campus or to experience the very best of London’s nightlife. It’s too far to walk if you’re living close to LSE, but public transport to and from Soho is very good with a number of different bus and Underground services in operation.

For something a little closer to the University you have Covent Garden with its countless food and drink stalls around the market plus a number of other exclusive bars and highly-rated places to eat and drink. There are also numerous theatres and places to go shopping should you require some retail therapy or a more cultural evening.

London’s West End is famous for its live performances and thanks to LSE’s central location you’ll be within a short journey by bus or tube if you want to take in a show. There are also a number of other popular but smaller theatres right by the LSE campus if you’re interested in watching performances from lesser-known actors and producers. For live outdoor theatre you also have the option of crossing the river and visiting Shakespeare’s Globe theatre which is located close to the Millennium Bridge.

The City of London business district is also just a short journey to the east of the main campus providing the perfect opportunity to find employment in fields based around students’ chosen courses, while

St. James’ Park and Lincoln’s Inn Fields are the nearest large green spaces but there are a number of smaller parks and open areas where you have the opportunity to relax, study or grab a bite to eat in the great outdoors.
