Studying at UCL

UCL was founded in 1826 and was the first University in the United Kingdom to welcome female students on an equal footing with males, as well as being the first to allow students of any race, religion or class. The main campus is in Bloomsbury in the very heart of London with the main campus situated on Gower Street.

This central locations has a wealth of benefits for students in terms of accessibility from their student rentals in London, wherever they may be, as well as the excellent transport links should they wish to get out and about to see the wider London area. Over time the reputation of UCL has grown and the campus has grown with it; with a number of new buildings being constructed today to help to cope with the growing demand for places on courses and student accommodation near UCL.

As the reputation of UCL began to grow they looked to focus their attentions on providing even more opportunities to study for even more people. UCL became the first British University to open a campus in Doha, Qatar, where it runs a centre for the study of cultural heritage. UCL also has a presence in Adelaide, Australia, which includes a space science and an energy policy institute.

UCL are currently in the process of developing a brand new UCL East campus over at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford that will form a part of a wider education and cultural quarter which will see a wealth of new student rentals, shops, bars, restaurants and entertainment venues created as part of the ongoing regeneration of the area following the 2012 Olympics.

According to the most recent release, UCL was ranked 7th in the QS World University Ranking, which puts it in 3rd in the UK behind Cambridge and Oxford.

The University itself is in the very heart of London meaning that there are plenty of places for students to go to find resources and course materials, to socialise and a wide range of opportunities for them to find student rentals near UCL without finding themselves a long way away from the University or so close that their lives revolve around studying and the main campus.

In addition to this the central location of UCL means that they have been able to build partnerships with a wealth of major organisations in the local area. There are already links with hospitals, museums, galleries and professional bodies which means that students at UCL are able to take advantage of placement schemes and work experience, and then they have the ties to the organisations after they graduate should they wish to apply for a position.

There are 11 different faculties at UCL meaning that there are all kinds of different courses that students can choose to take. The faculties themselves cover Arts and Humanities, Built Environment, Brain Sciences, Engineering, the Institute of Education, Laws, Life Sciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Medical Sciences, Population Health Sciences, and Social and Historical Sciences.

The Student’s Union, like many others at Universities across the country, is a hive of activity with plenty going on throughout the year. From fundraising events where societies look for innovative and exciting ways to raise funds for new equipment or for the University as a whole to on-campus bars and coffee shops where you can socialise there is always something going on at the S.U. where you can also find someone to speak to regarding any concerns or issues you may be having with student life.

If you cannot attend any of the dates then prospective students and their families are welcome to participate in a self-guided Bloomsbury campus tour between 10am and 4pm each week day where you can pick up a leaflet and look around the main campus, the University facilities and identify some of the student accommodation in Bloomsbury so that you can see what is in the immediate vicinity and whether you can see yourself studying at UCL and living in the Bloomsbury area.

Transport Links

With UCL located in the centre of London it makes travelling around by public transport relatively simple. You have a variety of different transport options including the bus, Underground and Overground rail services and you can use an Oyster Card to pay for the majority of your transport in and around the city.

Contactless payment has made getting around even simpler, allowing you to top-up your card and you simply hold it against the readers at the start and end of your journey. If you don’t have an Oyster Card then you can use a contactless bank card instead.

The nearest tube stations to UCL are Euston Square (which lies on the Hammersmith and City, Metropolitan and Circle lines), Warren Street (on the Northern and Victoria lines), Euston (again, on the Northern and Victoria lines) and Russell Square (which is on the Piccadilly line).

This means that you’ve got a walk of less than 10 minutes from the majority of local Tube stations to UCL so there is no need to base the location of your student accommodation solely on the proximity to the University (unless that is your priority, of course).

The nearest bus services travelling from north to south stop in Gower Street, immediately outside UCL’s main campus gate in Bloomsbury; while those travelling from east to west stop outside Warren Street station which is around a five minute walk from the University.

Euston is the nearest train mainline train station while King’s Cross and St Pancras are both within easy walking distance. St Pancras station is the London Eurostar terminal and is a short Underground or bus ride, or even a few minutes’ walk if you’d prefer, offering direct high speed rail connections to and from Paris and Brussels if you feel like getting away for a few days.

Student Life in Bloomsbury

The central London location of UCL means that students have access to a wide variety of different activities and forms of entertainment. The on-campus venues mean that you never have to venture into the city unless you want to, but because you’re already in the heart of the city – or commuting through it depending on the location of your student accommodation – you can visit some of the world-renowned culture and nightlife.

London was recently voted as the third-best city in the world for students and it’s easy to see why when you look at the sheer number of live entertainment and music venues, exclusive bars and Michelin-star restaurants. Bloomsbury is an area that’s already very popular with those in high-flying professions such as lawyers, doctors and academics.

In terms of green spaces and places to relax to forget about being in such a big city for a while, Bloomsbury is very well connected. Large open spaces such as Regent’s Park and the infamous Hyde Park are just a short distance away, while Russell Square is just a few minutes’ walk from UCL.

The British Museum is one of the largest and most popular historic and cultural attractions in the immediate area around UCL. If you’re interested in looking around the museum and its many ever-changing exhibits then it is easily accessible by Tube and is roughly equidistant between Holborn, Russell Square and Tottenham Court Road stations.

These popular locations include Covent Garden, Soho, Marylebone and Mayfair which all offer something different for UCL students. All are easily accessible from UCL and are ideal locations to visit to socialise with a group of friends no matter where your student rentals are in the city.
